Mumbai: Apex Hospitals, Borivali, has successfully conducted a complex Whipple’s procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) on a 68-year-old male patient diagnosed with cancer in the head of the pancreas — one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal cancers.

The patient was admitted under the care of Dr. Ramkishan Nag, Senior Cancer Specialist at Apex Group of Hospitals, with complaints of abdominal pain, vomiting, and persistent weakness.

Following detailed evaluation and imaging studies, the diagnosis of pancreatic head cancer was confirmed, and surgery was planned as the best possible treatment approach.

Pancreatic cancer is known for its silent progression, often showing minimal or vague symptoms in the early stages. Common signs such as abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice, loss of appetite, and sudden weight loss generally appear once the disease has advanced.

Because of the pancreas’s deep anatomical location, the condition is frequently detected late, leaving only a limited number of patients suitable for curative surgery. For those with tumors restricted to the head of the pancreas, the Whipple’s procedure remains the most effective surgical option to improve long-term survival.

This intricate operation involves the removal of the head of the pancreas along with portions of the duodenum, bile duct, and gallbladder. The digestive tract is then reconstructed to restore normal digestive function.

The procedure demands a high degree of surgical expertise, meticulous planning, and careful postoperative management. In this particular case, the surgery was performed with remarkable precision, resulting in minimal blood loss of just 180 ml — a reflection of both the surgical team’s proficiency and the hospital’s advanced facilities and clinical support systems.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Ramkishan Nag explained, “Pancreatic cancer remains one of the toughest cancers to manage, but advancements in diagnostics and surgical techniques have significantly improved outcomes.

When performed at specialized centers equipped with modern infrastructure and experienced teams, the Whipple procedure can offer patients a renewed chance at life. At Apex Hospital, we aim to blend technology, skill, and compassionate care in every treatment journey.”

Following surgery, the patient showed steady recovery, with stable vital signs and gradual resumption of oral intake. Early detection and timely surgical intervention played a crucial role in achieving a positive outcome.

The successful completion of such a complex surgery underscores the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality cancer care through precision-driven and patient-focused medical practices.
