New Delhi: An 85-year-old woman, Mrs. Savitri Agarwal, has fully recovered after undergoing a complex surgery for ovarian cancer at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre.

Initially, diagnosed with an ovarian mass through a CT scan, her condition worsened rapidly, causing severe vomiting, abdominal pain, and an intestinal blockage due to the growing tumor.

A team of specialists, led by Dr Vishnu Agarwal, Consultant Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery, decided to proceed with a high-risk surgery despite Mrs Agarwal's advanced age.

The extensive seven-hour cytoreductive surgery involved the removal of the large ovarian mass, part of the colon, and the spleen, which had adhered to surrounding organs. The operation was successful, and Mrs Agarwal experienced no complications.

Postoperative care was handled by Dr Shruti Tandon, intensivist at Jaslok Hospital. Mrs Agarwal recovered swiftly, walking within two days and discharged within a week. She is now leading a normal life, enjoying her daily activities.

Dr Vishnu Agarwal emphasized, "Age should never be a barrier to life-saving treatment. While Mrs. Savitri's case presented significant challenges, timely intervention offered her a chance to cure. This underscores that even in complex cases involving elderly patients, bold decisions and timely surgery can lead to full recoveries."

Mrs Savitri expressed her gratitude: "Upon receiving my diagnosis, I was nervous about the possibility of undergoing surgery at my age. However, Dr Agarwal and the entire team at Jaslok Hospital instilled in me a sense of hope and confidence. Thanks to their expertise, I am now able to enjoy life to the fullest with my loved ones."

Dr Milind Khadke, Director of Medical Services at Jaslok Hospital, added, "This case is a testament to the extraordinary strides in modern medical science and the resilience of our patients. Jaslok believes that age should not be a limiting factor in pursuing treatment when there's an opportunity to improve quality of life."
