Hidden Eye Tumour Removed Successfully at Max Multi-Speciality Centre

New Delhi: Doctors at Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, have successfully removed a hidden orbital tumour located deep behind a patient’s eyeball — a condition that initially disguised itself as a routine thyroid-related eye problem.
For 33-year-old Mr. Gupta, an IT professional, life took an unexpected turn when he noticed his right eye slowly beginning to protrude. What started as mild pressure and a dull ache soon became a visible outward bulge.
Because only one eye was affected — a condition known as unilateral proptosis — and his thyroid tests showed mildly elevated TSH levels, he was initially treated for a thyroid-related eye disorder.
But as weeks passed, Mr. Gupta’s discomfort grew. His eye continued to push forward, and the pain deepened. Concerned that something wasn’t right, he sought a second opinion at Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park.
There, he met Dr. Rituraj Baruah, Associate Director, Ophthalmology, who immediately noticed the severity of the eye’s forward displacement and subtle changes in Mr. Gupta’s vision. Advanced imaging revealed the real cause: a 2.5 x 2.0 x 1.5 cm tumour — about the size of a large grape — hidden behind the eyeball, pressing against the optic nerve.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Rituraj Baruah, said, “When a patient presents with a bulging eye, thyroid disease is usually the first possibility we evaluate. However, as the symptoms progressed, it became clear that something deeper was happening. The tumour was pushing the eyeball outward and stretching the optic nerve. Without timely treatment, his vision could have been permanently affected.”
To safely access the mass, Dr. Baruah and his team performed a delicate, highly precise surgery.
“We temporarily removed a small segment of the bone forming the outer wall of the eye socket to create a safe surgical corridor. Once we reached the tumour, we gently excised it without disturbing the surrounding delicate structures. The bone was then repositioned and secured. Fortunately, the tumour turned out to be benign, and the patient recovered very well.” Dr. Baruah added.
Mr. Gupta’s surgery underscores the importance of seeking specialized care when symptoms don’t improve — even if initial tests suggest a common diagnosis. Early expert evaluation at Max Multi Speciality Centre helped save his vision and prevent long-term damage.
With this successful outcome, Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, reaffirms its expertise in diagnosing and treating complex eye conditions, ensuring patients receive timely and precise care when it matters most.
