Laser Eye Surgery Performed at Army Hospital R&R

New Delhi: Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) in New Delhi has performed Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery using the ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System.
The procedure, carried out by Brigadier S.K. Mishra on a 61-year-old patient, involved Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), which uses a femtosecond laser to automate critical steps such as corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and cataract fragmentation with micron-level precision.
This advancement in robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgery supports the hospital’s goal of enhancing safety and outcomes in eye care for defence personnel and their families.
Additionally, the Department of Ophthalmology at AHRR recently conducted a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery using a 3D microscope. The 3D visualisation system aids in surgeries related to squint, cataract, corneal conditions, glaucoma, and retinal issues.
It employs special 3D polarisation glasses and a 55-inch 4K ultra-HD display, offering potential benefits such as reduced surgical time, lower complication rates, reduced photo-toxicity, and increased satisfaction among surgical teams.
Under the guidance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Ophthalmology Department continues to implement advanced technologies in clinical care.
Earlier this year, the Armed Forces Medical Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) to enhance mental health support for defence personnel.
The collaboration includes joint research, training, faculty exchange, and the development of mental health programmes focused on issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression among soldiers, sailors, airmen, and their families.
