First Carotid Artery Stenting in Old Delhi Done at Sanjeevan Hospital

Central Delhi: Sanjeevan Hospital has successfully performed the first carotid artery stenting procedure in the region, marking an important advancement in stroke-prevention care.

The procedure was performed by Dr Manav Aggarwal, Cardiologist at Sanjeevan Hospital, who has extensive experience in interventional cardiology and the management of complex vascular conditions. The achievement underscores the hospital’s growing capability to deliver advanced, minimally invasive cardiovascular interventions closer to the local population.

The patient, a 55-year-old man with a known history of diabetes mellitus, presented with recurrent episodes of syncope and seizures. Given the concerning neurological symptoms, the patient underwent a detailed clinical evaluation followed by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for carotid assessment. The angiographic findings revealed critical 90% stenosis of the left internal carotid artery, a condition associated with a high risk of ischemic stroke.

In view of the severity of the stenosis and the patient’s symptoms, the multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with carotid artery stenting. The narrowed segment of the left internal carotid artery was successfully opened using a stent, restoring adequate cerebral blood flow. The procedure was completed using advanced endovascular techniques, with the patient remaining hemodynamically stable throughout and demonstrating good neurological recovery in the post-procedure period.

Compared to conventional surgical approaches, carotid artery stenting offers advantages such as shorter recovery time, reduced hospital stays and faster return to daily activities when performed in appropriately selected patients.
