Mumbai : Fortis Hospital Mulund successfully performed a heart transplant on a 58-year-old former Indian Army serviceman from Ahmednagar, giving him a new lease on life.

The surgery was carried out on October 8, 2025, under the leadership of Dr Satish Javali, Senior Consultant CardioThoracic Surgery, along with a multidisciplinary transplant team.

This operation marked Mumbai’s 42nd organ donation and 15th heart transplant of 2025, reflecting the city’s growing commitment to organ donation and the collaboration between healthcare professionals, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), civil authorities, and donor families.

Journey of the Recipient and Donor

The recipient had been diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction in October 2023. Despite multiple medical interventions, his condition worsened, and he was listed for a transplant in April 2024.

The donor, a 39-year-old male, suffered a fatal head injury, and his family’s compassionate decision to donate his organs, including the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, intestine, and pancreas, helped save multiple lives across Mumbai. The donor’s mother, brother, and sister-in-law provided consent for the donation.

The donor heart was transported through a green corridor from another Mumbai hospital to Fortis Mulund in just 28 minutes, ensuring the organ’s viability and enabling timely surgery.

Team Speaks on the Success

Dr Vishal Beri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said, “This successful transplant highlights the importance of teamwork between hospitals, traffic authorities, and most importantly, the donor’s family, whose generosity in a time of loss made this possible. Our team remains dedicated to providing advanced cardiac care and restoring hope to patients and their families.”

Dr Satish Javali, Lead Transplant Surgeon, added,

“The patient was in end-stage heart failure, and time was critical. The availability of a matching donor heart and the swift green corridor were key to the success of this transplant. The patient is now stable and recovering under close observation in the Cardiac ICU. Recovery will take time, but the initial progress is promising.”

Fortis Mulund’s Role in Advanced Transplant Care

Fortis Hospital Mulund remains a leading centre for cardiac and multi-organ transplants in India, with a strong record of successful heart, liver, and kidney surgeries. Its advanced infrastructure, experienced surgical teams, and comprehensive post-transplant care have made it a trusted destination for patients with complex cardiac and organ failure conditions.
