7-Month-Old Baby Saved with Rare Liver Transplant at Jupiter Hospital

Thane: Doctors at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, successfully performed a complex liver transplant on a 7-month-old baby girl, Baby Divisha (Baby D), who was suffering from biliary atresia, a rare condition where the bile ducts and gall bladder fail to develop properly.
Baby D, weighing just 5 kilograms, was admitted at five months with jaundice, pale-colored stools, an enlarged liver, and delayed growth despite a normal birth. Genetic testing revealed an additional condition, LCHAD deficiency, which caused her illness to progress rapidly and severely.
At her stage, a liver transplant was the only curative option. While her parents and uncle were evaluated as potential donors, they were found unsuitable due to blood group mismatch or fatty liver. In an extraordinary gesture, her 59-year-old grandfather stepped forward and was a suitable match to donate a portion of his liver.
By six months, Baby D’s condition had worsened, with fluid accumulation in the abdomen and clotting deficiencies. The hospital extended concessions to ensure the lifesaving procedure could proceed despite the family’s financial constraints.
The surgery was challenging due to the infant’s small size, as even the smallest adult liver graft can exceed the infant’s abdominal capacity. Surgeons reduced the donor’s liver to a hyper-reduced monosegment 2 graft, and an interventional radiologist placed a stent in the portal vein to address inflow issues.
A multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, pediatric intensivists, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, nurses, and nutritionists coordinated the procedure successfully. Baby D is now recovering well, feeding, gaining weight, and active, while her grandfather is also healthy and doing fine.
Dr Anand Ramamurthy, Director of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Jupiter Hospital, said: “This case highlights medical innovation, teamwork, and family courage.
Performing a hyper-reduced monosegment graft in such a small infant was technically challenging but necessary to save her life. We are grateful for the grandfather’s selfless donation and proud of our team.”
This case underscores Jupiter Hospital’s commitment to providing advanced medical care for rare and complex conditions.
