From 22-Month-Old Patient to Doctor: Inspiring Liver Transplant Journey Revealed - Apollo Hospitals

New Delhi: Apollo Hospitals recently organized a comprehensive Clinical Update in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, which included an endoscopy workshop and a continuing medical education program for pediatricians.
Held from December 4–7, 2025, the event brought together leading pediatric specialists, trainees, and experts from across India and 17 other countries. The sessions focused on the newest developments in pediatric gastrointestinal and liver care, offering hands-on training and academic discussions.
The occasion also reflected Apollo’s long-standing contributions to children’s liver care in India. In November 1998, Apollo Hospitals Delhi carried out a successful pediatric liver transplant for a 22-month-old patient, Master Sanjay.
Today, at 29, he is a practicing doctor and married, symbolizing how far pediatric transplant care has progressed within the institution. Apollo has continued to expand its expertise over the years and has now completed 5,000 liver transplants, including 615 in children, treating patients from more than 50 countries.
The workshop served as a forum for sharing insights on evolving techniques such as pediatric therapeutic endoscopy and manometry. The focus remained on building skills, improving clinical practices, and supporting young specialists through structured academic learning.
Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder & Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, highlighted the vision behind Apollo’s journey. He emphasized that access to high-quality healthcare should not depend on geography and expressed pride in the progress the team has made.
He noted that nearly 30% of pediatric consultations involve gastrointestinal or liver concerns, and treatment options continue to improve with advancements in technology and clinical research.
Mr. Shivakumar Pattabhiraman, Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, reiterated Apollo’s commitment to delivering care that aligns with global standards. He added that the confidence shown by international patients inspires the team to consistently enhance its services and ensure superior outcomes.
Dr. (Prof.) Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director and Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist, stated that Apollo has played a central role in shaping pediatric liver and gastrointestinal care in the country.
He emphasized the importance of training upcoming specialists and shared that Apollo now performs ABO-incompatible liver transplants and liver transplants for babies weighing as little as 4 kg or those with complex medical conditions.
Lt. General (Dr.) Bipin Puri, Director Medical Services at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, spoke about Apollo’s reputation as a referral center for challenging pediatric cases. He credited the team’s strong clinical training, collaboration, and dedication for the trust that clinicians and families place in the institution.
