Imphal: Manipur reported 14 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the total number of infections in the state to 34, according to state health officials.

The new cases were detected in three districts - eight in Imphal West, and three each in Imphal East and Bishnupur. These three districts are part of the Imphal valley region.

Providing a district-wise update, officials said Imphal West accounted for the highest number with 22 cases. Imphal East reported six cases, followed by Bishnupur with four, and one case each in Thoubal and Kakching districts.

The current wave of infections in Manipur began on June 9, when a 23-year-old woman from Bishnupur district tested positive for the virus. According to Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director of Manipur Health Services, she had developed COVID-like symptoms and was tested at a private clinic in Imphal on June 5. Her positive result was confirmed on June 9.

Dr Gonmei urged residents to stay alert, citing the spread of COVID-19 in other parts of the country. “He appealed to people to be on alert in view of the spread of the infection in other parts of the country,” an official statement said.

In response to the rising number of cases, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held a COVID-19 review meeting on Monday at Raj Bhavan. Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior officials from the state Health Department, and other concerned authorities were present.

The review followed recent directives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), which called for heightened preparedness in light of a possible resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

A Raj Bhavan official said the Governor was briefed on the state's readiness, covering areas such as diagnostics, availability of personal protective equipment (PPE), oxygen supply, ICU and isolation wards, essential medicines, and data tracking through the IDSP–IHIP portal.

The meeting also addressed challenges related to testing capacity, hospital infrastructure, and medical supplies.

“The Governor advised the importance of proactive measures, adequate medical infrastructure, and community awareness to ensure the state remains equipped to handle any potential surge in COVID-19 cases,” the official added.
