Hyderabad: A 19-year-old man from Somalia, who lost his penis as a child, has been given a second chance at a normal life after undergoing a rare and complex reconstructive surgery in Hyderabad.

In a first-of-its-kind procedure in Telangana, doctors at Medicover Hospitals successfully performed a full penile reconstruction, restoring his ability to lead a normal life.

The patient had lost his penis at the age of four due to a severe infection following circumcision, leading to years of emotional distress, social stigma, and functional challenges.

Despite multiple consultations in different countries, he was unable to find a viable treatment until he approached Medicover Hospitals, Hyderabad. A team of specialists, including Senior Consultant Urologist & Andrologist Dr. A.V. Ravikumar and Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Dasari Madhu Vinay Kumar, took on the challenge of reconstructing the lost organ using advanced microsurgical techniques.

The procedure was a highly complex 10-hour-long microvascular surgery that involved reconstructing the penis using a radial artery forearm flap. This method, commonly used in advanced reconstructive procedures, utilizes tissue from the patient’s forearm, ensuring both structural integrity and functional restoration. The new penile structure was carefully crafted to restore urination capability and sensory function.

Dr. A.V. Ravikumar confirmed, "The patient is now fully capable of normal urination," while Dr. Dasari Madhu Vinay Kumar added, "The patient has successfully regained penile sensations and has undergone a penile implant, enabling him to lead a normal sexual life."

Expressing his gratitude, the patient said, "For years, I lived in emotional distress, feeling incomplete. Today, I have regained my identity, confidence, and a chance to lead a normal life. I am deeply thankful to Medicover Hospitals for making this possible. I look forward to starting a new chapter, including marriage."

This case highlights the transformative impact of reconstructive surgery, offering renewed hope for individuals with similar conditions. Through precise surgical expertise, the procedure has enabled the young man to regain both function and confidence, allowing him to move forward with his life.
