It not only affects the individual’s physical well-being but also has a deep impact on mental health, productivity, and overall quality of life. As we strive towards a healthier India, it is crucial that we address lifestyle diseases like obesity with seriousness and urgency. I commend Fortis Healthcare for taking a proactive step in launching a dedicated obesity clinic. This initiative will provide people with access to specialized care, scientific guidance, and holistic treatment options that can make a real difference in their lives. Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD & CEO, Fortis Healthcare said,

“Obesity is a growing chronic health concern that not only increases the risk of serious non-communicable diseases but also diminishes overall quality of life and life expectancy. At Fortis Healthcare, we recognize the urgent need to address this issue with compassion, expertise, and innovation. Our newly launched Obesity Clinic embodies our commitment to a holistic, patient-first approach - offering personalized, multidisciplinary care that empowers individuals to achieve sustainable weight management. With projections indicating that nearly 44 crore Indians could be affected by obesity by 2050, the scale of the challenge is immense. As Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi rightly says, ‘Better Health today is Better Future tomorrow.’ At Fortis, we stand dedicated to building that healthier future—starting now.”

Dr. Mugdha Tapdiya, Director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj said,

“Obesity is one of the most pressing health challenges of our time, not just due to its visible impact, but because of the serious health risks it poses. At our dedicated Obesity Clinic, we go beyond weight loss. Our goal is to help patients manage the wide-ranging complications associated with obesity through comprehensive, evidence-based care. In the last decade, there has been a lot of clinical research in the field of obesity medicine and approval of certain anti-obesity medicines by the USFDA; a few of them are now approved by the CDSCO and are available in India. The clinic is equipped with advanced facilities for body composition analysis, with results explained clearly in a scientific yet accessible manner. Our obesity management program is tailored to each individual, offering resources, guidance, and ongoing support to address not only weight management but also concerns related to body image, nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and more. To accurately identify triggers for obesity and related complications, we conduct detailed investigations, physical examinations, and evaluations using validated medical scales. Following this, our multidisciplinary team—including doctors, psychologists, dieticians, and physiotherapists—performs an in-depth assessment to create a personalized, holistic care plan for each patient.”

Recent studies underscore the urgency of addressing obesity in India. A global analysis published in The Lancet estimates that by 2050, India could have over 440 million obese and overweight people across age groups. Obesity is a complex, chronic, relapsing, and progressive disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that impairs health. Recognized globally as a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), it significantly elevates the risk for cardiovascular (heart), metabolic, oncologic (cancer), and musculoskeletal disorders. India is among the top 3 most obese nations, with 70% of the urban population being overweight.
