Andhra Pradesh’s First Robotic-Assisted Heart Bypass Performed at CARE Hospitals

Vishakhapatnam: CARE Hospitals, Vishakhapatnam, has successfully performed robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery in Andhra Pradesh. The procedure was carried out on a 54-year-old male patient who had been diagnosed with triple-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD TVD) during a routine health screening.
The patient’s strong family history of heart disease prompted a cardiac evaluation, which included a treadmill test (TMT) and a coronary angiogram. The tests revealed severe blockages in all three major coronary arteries, indicating the need for advanced surgical intervention.
After a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, the CARE cardiac team recommended a minimally invasive coronary surgery (MICS) using robotic assistance. The procedure involved robotic-assisted harvesting of the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) with the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical robot, followed by the placement of two grafts through a small incision.
This approach allows surgeons to operate with enhanced precision while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues, reducing blood loss, and supporting faster recovery for the patient.
Mr. Varun Khanna, Group Managing Director, Quality Care India Limited, commented, “We are proud to provide this advanced cardiac surgery in Andhra Pradesh, allowing patients to access world-class treatment within the state. Our goal is to extend technology-driven healthcare services to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities while training the next generation of surgeons in these minimally invasive techniques.”
Dr. Nikhil Mathur, Group Chief of Medical Services at CARE Hospitals, highlighted, “The successful use of robotic-assisted coronary bypass surgery demonstrates the depth of expertise within our cardiac surgery team. Our commitment is to provide precise, safe, and effective treatment for patients with complex heart conditions.”
Dr. L. Vijay, Clinical Director and Lead Consultant – Cardiac Surgery, added, “Patients benefit significantly from smaller incisions, reduced pain, and shorter recovery periods. In this case, the patient was discharged just four days after surgery, achieving nearly 40% faster recovery compared to traditional bypass methods.”
With the integration of the da Vinci robotic system, CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, now offers advanced cardiac surgery on par with leading centers worldwide.
This development ensures that patients from Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states, including Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the Northeast, can access high-end cardiac care without traveling to metropolitan cities.
The hospital continues to focus on combining advanced technology with patient-centered care to improve outcomes and enhance the overall patient experience.
