Heroic Rescue: CPR and Medicover Save Life After Near-Fatal Railway Accident

Navi Mumbai: Medicover Hospital played a crucial role in saving the life of 46-year-old Mr. Vijay Bhosale from Khalapur, a key rescue volunteer from Help Foundation, who sustained life-threatening injuries during a rescue operation near the Rasayani Police Station railway premises on December 28.
The incident highlights how timely, quick on-ground Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, swift decision-making, and advanced hospital care can collectively turn a near-fatal situation into a story of survival and hope.
An individual in severe distress climbed an electric railway pole, creating a high-risk and challenging rescue situation near the railway premises. During the rescue operation, unforeseen difficulties led to a serious accident, leaving rescue volunteer Mr. Vijay Bhosale unconscious and not breathing.
The situation quickly turned critical, demanding immediate action on the ground. Recognising the urgency, Mr. Gurunath Sathelkar, Founder of Help Foundation, promptly administered CPR at the site, which helped restore Mr. Bhosale’s breathing.
His swift response proved vital in those crucial moments. Mr. Bhosale was then immediately rushed to Medicover Hospitals, where he was admitted in a critical condition for advanced emergency care.
"Upon arrival at Medicover Hospital, Mr. Bhosale was brought to us in an extremely critical state with electric shock injury, tongue bite, inhalational injury, second-degree burns, spine and rib fractures, and every minute was vital. Our immediate focus was on stabilizing his vital functions and preventing further complications.
With continuous monitoring, respiratory support, and round-the-clock critical care, we were able to gradually bring him out of danger and guide him toward recovery. Treatment included overall recovery from all his severe injuries, stabilizing him, secondary suturing of the tongue bite, daily burns dressing, CLW on the right eye and greater toe, fracture management, and surgical opinion for the fracture.
He was placed under continuous monitoring and managed by a dedicated multidisciplinary team (Ophthalmologist, Dental Surgeon, Pulmonologist, Orthopedics, ENT, General Surgery, Cardiologist, and Plastic surgeons) using advanced medical infrastructure,” said Neeraj Lal, Regional Director for the Maharashtra and Karnataka Region at Medicover Hospitals.
Neeraj Lal further added, “Over the following weeks, through timely interventions and coordinated critical care, his condition gradually stabilized. After intensive treatment and recovery, he was successfully discharged on January 12.
The timely CPR given at the site made a huge difference, allowing us to build on that initial response with advanced medical support. CPR is crucial because it helps maintain blood flow and oxygen to vital organs when the heart or breathing stops, buying precious time until medical help arrives. Immediate CPR can increase survival chances and reduce the risk of permanent brain damage.
CPR training is important because it empowers ordinary people to act quickly and confidently in emergencies, helping save lives before medical help arrives. A coordinated team often decides the outcome in severe trauma cases.
Critical injuries require not only advanced technology but also careful clinical judgment and ongoing reassessment. Seeing him walk out of the hospital was a proud moment for the entire team."
"I am deeply grateful to Medicover Hospital and the entire medical team for giving me a second chance at life. From the moment I was brought in, the doctors, nurses, and support staff treated me with utmost care and dedication.
Their timely treatment, constant monitoring, and encouragement helped me recover during the most difficult phase of my life. I am thankful to Mr. Gurunath Sathelkar, the team of Help Foundation, and Medicover Hospital for standing by me when it mattered the most,” said the patient, Mr. Vijay Bhosale.
