Bilaspur: In a rare medical case, doctors at Rainbow Hospital in Ghumarwin successfully performed surgery to remove 33 currency coins from the stomach of a 32-year-old man. The patient, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, had been admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and a visibly swollen stomach.

According to hospital CEO Monica Sharma, the man was brought in by his relatives after complaining of persistent stomach pain. Following initial examinations, X-ray reports revealed the presence of multiple coins in his stomach. A medical team, led by Dr. Ankush, decided to proceed with surgery after thorough evaluation and repeated diagnostic tests.

The surgical procedure, which lasted three hours, resulted in the extraction of a total of 247 grams of coins of varying denominations. Among the coins removed were one Rs 20 coin, 27 Rs 10 coins, and five Rs 2 coins. Doctors took extra precautions during the procedure due to the patient’s schizophrenia diagnosis.

Dr. Ankush explained that schizophrenia is a complex mental health disorder that affects thought processes, perceptions, and emotional responses. In some cases, individuals with the condition may engage in unusual behaviors, such as ingesting non-edible objects. He emphasized that the patient’s psychological condition likely contributed to the ingestion of the coins over time.

The patient was admitted to the hospital on January 30, and following extensive investigations, the decision was made to perform the surgery. Post-surgery, the patient is recovering well, and doctors expect to discharge him in a couple of days. His relatives have expressed gratitude to the medical team for their swift and effective treatment.

This unusual case highlights the importance of timely medical intervention and mental health awareness. Experts advise that individuals with schizophrenia or similar conditions require close monitoring and appropriate psychiatric care to prevent such incidents. The successful surgery at Rainbow Hospital stands as a testament to the expertise of the medical team in handling complex cases.
