Gurugram: In a significant advancement for hip replacement surgery in India, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, has successfully performed a 3D-navigated Total Hip Replacement (THR) on a 60-year-old patient suffering from Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head, using the newly introduced IntelliJoint 3D Navigation System.

This surgery, performed by Dr. Gurdeep Avinash Ratra and Dr Pranshul Bishnoi with the support of their, marks the 4th such surgery in India and the first within the entire Manipal network, positioning the hospital at the forefront of next-generation hip replacement technology.

The 60-year-old patient had been struggling with persistent hip pain, limited movement, and difficulty performing daily activities due to Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. His condition had progressively worsened, leading to limited mobility.

He visited Manipal Hospitals seeking a solution that could offer higher accuracy and better long-term outcomes, hence, IntelliJoint 3D-Navigated Hip Replacement was suggested. The IntelliJoint system is a groundbreaking technique that has been used only in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai, making this procedure one of the earliest in the country.

This surgery helps patients as there is reduced pain, minimal tissue damage, lower risk of complications, improved mobility, and longer-lasting implants, resulting in safer outcomes and a significantly improved quality of life.

Dr. Gurdeep Avinash Ratra, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, said, “While robotic hip replacement technology has been growing at a significant rate in India, 3D-navigated hip replacement is still in its early stages, with very few centres offering this advanced technique.

This technique provides real-time, intraoperative measurements for fast, easy, and accurate implant alignment for cup position, leg length, and offset, and allows for fine-tuning these rather than guessing. Following the surgery, the patient experienced improvement in joint stability and alignment in a few days. With accurate implant positioning and restored leg length, he began mobilising with support within the expected recovery period.”

Dr Pranshul Bishnoi, Consultant - Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram , said “IntelliJoint 3D navigation is a revolution in joint replacement surgery. This makes joint replacement safer and more effective for patients as it improves the accuracy of the surgery which help patients experience better joint movement that feels more natural and comfortable.

It also enables the implant to last longer and reduces the chances of complications which means patients can walk better, regain confidence and return to their daily routines sooner with improved comfort and mobility.”

This successful surgery highlights Manipal Hospitals’ commitment to introducing cutting-edge technologies that enhance surgical precision, safety, and patient recovery. This marks the 4th IntelliJoint 3D-navigated hip replacement in India, positioning the hospital among the select centres with advanced expertise in performing and managing such complex procedures.
