Mumbai: Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai has successfully performed a robotic surgery for Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS) — a rare vascular disorder that affects only 1–2 people per 100,000. The complex and delicate procedure was led by Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Senior Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon, using the advanced Da Vinci Xi robotic system.

The patient, 60-year-old Mahendra Sawant from Chunnabhatti, had been suffering for over a year with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and discomfort after eating even small amounts of food. Despite consulting several hospitals, his condition remained undiagnosed and untreated, leaving him physically and emotionally drained.

At Gleneagles Hospital, thorough evaluation revealed that he was suffering from Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome, a condition where the ligament compresses an artery supplying blood to the digestive organs.

“MALS surgeries are extremely intricate because the affected artery lies very close to the aorta. Robotic technology provides unmatched precision, 3D visualization, and control—allowing us to operate safely and effectively in such rare and high-risk cases,” explained Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Senior Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai.

Unlike traditional open surgeries that may take several hours and carry a higher risk of bleeding, the Gleneagles team completed the procedure in just 48 minutes with minimal blood loss. The patient was able to walk, eat, and recover comfortably the very next day.

“This surgery required continuous hemodynamic monitoring and exceptional coordination,” said Dr. Anil Parakh, Head of Anesthesiology, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai. “Precise planning and advanced anesthesia support played a vital role in ensuring a safe and smooth surgery.”

“This procedure highlights our ongoing effort to deliver advanced surgical care and bring global technologies to our patients,” said Dr. Bipin Chevale, CEO, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai.

Reflecting on his recovery, Mr. Sawant shared, “For more than a year, I couldn’t enjoy a single meal without pain. Every bite made me fear the worst. After this surgery, I can finally eat normally again and live without pain. I’m deeply thankful to Dr. Gandhi and the Gleneagles team for giving me a fresh start.”
