Noida: In a rare reported clinical case, Doctors at Fortis Noida successfully removed a 437-gram prostate from an 85-year-old man using robot-assisted surgery, marking one of the largest recorded prostate removals via robotics in Uttar Pradesh.

The patient, suffering from debilitating urinary symptoms for more than two decades, had been advised surgery over 10 years ago. However, in the last six months, his condition worsened, with severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as obstructed flow, frequent urgency, and repeated episodes of acute urinary retention.

He had become dependent on a urinary catheter for the past several months, drastically affecting his quality of life.

Upon evaluation at Fortis Noida, the patient was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous yet severely symptomatic enlargement of the prostate. Measuring over 400 grams (precisely 437 grams), the gland size was far beyond the typical threshold managed through conventional surgeries.

A team of doctors led by Dr. Piyush Varshney, Director - Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Noida, recommended a robotic simple prostatectomy, performed with the Da Vinci Surgical Robot. This advanced robotic platform offers high-definition 3D visualization, tremor reduction, and wristed instruments that provide unmatched surgical precision while preserving surrounding structures.

The surgery was completed successfully with minimal blood loss, and the patient was discharged within just 48 hours in a stable condition.

Giving details of the case, Dr Piyush Varshney, Director – Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “This was one of the largest weighing prostates we have operated robotically. Robotic-assisted prostatectomy is revolutionizing how we treat enlarged prostates, especially those of significant size.

Patients benefit from lesser pain, lower complication rates and a much faster return to normal activities. It’s a game-changer. With the assistance of the robotic platform, we were able to achieve an exceptional outcome with minimal blood loss, faster recovery and significantly reduced post-operative pain.

In this case, what would have previously required a large open incision and weeks of painful recovery was completed through a few small cuts and minimal disruption to the patient’s daily life. The patient was walking the very next day and discharged within 48 hours and has since reported a very good improvement in urinary function and overall well-being.”

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, the patient said, “I had resigned myself to a life of discomfort and limitations for several years. Thanks to Dr. Varshney and his team, I feel like I have a second chance at life. I only wish I had done this sooner.”

Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Noida, said, “This case is a great testimony of the power of advanced healthcare technology – robotic aided surgery in this case which helped managed complex urological conditions.

The success of this case highlights not only the technological advances in the surgical field but also the importance of surgeon expertise and thoughtful patient care. At Fortis Noida, our focus is on delivering cutting-edge, ethical and patient-centric care that not only ensures long-term survival but also significantly improves quality of life.”
