Chennai: Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, has successfully performed the removal of one of the world’s largest fibroid uteruses using robotic-assisted surgery, marking another advancement in minimally invasive gynecological care.

The uterus, weighing 4.95 kilograms—nearly equivalent to a 36-week pregnancy—was removed through a robotic hysterectomy performed by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Robotic Surgeon, utilizing the Da Vinci XI Surgical System.

The patient, a 47-year-old school teacher from Chennai, had been struggling with symptoms of abdominal bloating, heaviness, and discomfort for several months. After clinical evaluation and detailed MRI imaging, multiple large fibroids ranging from 12 to 20 centimeters in size were detected.

Considering the size, location, and vascularity of the fibroids, the surgical team decided to perform a robotic-assisted total hysterectomy to ensure greater precision, minimal blood loss, and faster recovery.

The surgery, despite its complexity, was completed successfully within four hours. The advanced robotic system enabled surgeons to work with enhanced accuracy, stability, and visualization, minimizing risks associated with traditional open or laparoscopic methods.

Notably, the patient experienced minimal blood loss, zero complications, and was able to walk the next morning after the procedure. She was discharged from the hospital the following day, a testament to the efficiency of robotic-assisted surgery in complex cases.

Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Padmapriya Vivek said, “This case demonstrates how robotic-assisted technology allows us to manage even the most challenging gynecological conditions with safety and precision. The robotic system gives surgeons a magnified, 3D view and fine instrument control, helping achieve excellent surgical outcomes and faster patient recovery.”

Ms. Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer & Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, added, “We are proud of our team’s dedication and clinical excellence. At Gleneagles, our mission is to make advanced robotic surgery accessible, ensuring world-class treatment and compassionate care for every patient.”

Sharing her experience, Mrs. Ramya said, “When I found out that I had a 5 kg fibroid, I was terrified and uncertain about my future. The doctors explained the procedure clearly and assured me that robotic surgery would be safe and help me recover faster.

They were right—I was walking within a day and returned to my routine much sooner than I expected. I’m extremely grateful to Dr. Padmapriya and the Gleneagles team for giving me back my health and confidence.”

This successful surgery further strengthens Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai’s reputation as a leading center for robotic-assisted and advanced women’s healthcare, offering precision, safety, and comfort to patients across India and beyond.
