Gleneagles Chennai Performs India's First Pulmonary Denervation on 32-Year-Old Woman
Chennai: Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, renowned for its medical innovation and patient care, proudly announces the successful execution of India's first pulmonary denervation procedure. This groundbreaking treatment was performed on a 32-year-old female patient from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, who was suffering from right-sided heart failure. Led by Dr. Guru Prasad Sogunuru, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, the minimally invasive procedure allowed the patient to avoid a lung transplant.
Pulmonary hypertension is a progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lungs' arteries, leading to shortness of breath, dizziness, and heart failure. Right-sided heart failure, a common consequence of pulmonary hypertension, occurs when the right side of the heart is unable to pump effectively, leading to fluid buildup and further complications.
The team of expert cardiologists and pulmonologists of Gleneagles Hospital Chennai with the help of advanced catheter-based technology performed the procedure on the patient targeting the disrupted nerve signals contributing to the patient's high blood pressure in the lungs. The successful intervention marks a significant milestone in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in India.
“The patient's severe symptoms were not effectively controlled by medicine alone, and she had struggled with pulmonary hypertension for more than a decade. As a result of a buildup of the dangerous chemical adrenaline, she eventually experienced right-sided heart failure, said Dr Guru Prasad Sogunuru, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai. We had performed pulmonary denervation procedure which lasted for an hour, post-procedure, the patient reported significant improvement in symptoms and overall well-being and got discharged from hospital next day of the procedure, added Dr Guruprasad. Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai is the center of Excellence for this procedure recruiting more patients for this treatment.
