The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, recently hosted “MitoConnect 2026,” a national symposium that brought together doctors, scientists, researchers, and students to discuss the growing role of mitochondria in health, disease, and future therapies.

Organised in collaboration with the Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (SMRM), the event focused on how mitochondria are not just the energy producers of cells but also play a key role in metabolism, ageing, and several diseases.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Nirupam Madaan, Medical Superintendent at AIIMS, highlighted the increasing importance of mitochondrial research in modern medicine. She stressed the need for stronger research tools and collaboration to support future medical breakthroughs.

The symposium featured a keynote lecture by Padma Shri Dr. K. Thangaraj, along with talks by leading experts from institutions such as BARC, NIMHANS, and Gautam Buddha University. Discussions covered the role of mitochondria in neurological disorders, autism, and tuberculosis.

AIIMS researchers also shared insights into innovative and cost-effective approaches for treating diseases like TB by targeting mitochondrial function.

The event saw participation from over 125 delegates across major institutions. Students were also recognised for their research contributions during the closing session.

Overall, MitoConnect 2026 was seen as an important step towards strengthening collaboration and advancing research in mitochondrial medicine in India.
