Bhopal: Under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur conducted health check-ups and counselling sessions for 40 pregnant women at its OPD.

The programme provided guidance on maternal and newborn health, nutrition, and the importance of timely check-ups. Four high-risk cases were identified and given medical advice along with prescribed medications for special care. Helpline numbers were also shared to provide additional support.

PMSMA, a government initiative, aims to provide fixed-day, free, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care on the 9th of every month to all pregnant women in their second or third trimester at designated public health facilities, with care provided by government obstetricians or medical officers.

In Burhanpur, the camps were organised under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Civil Surgeon. A total of 40 women underwent prenatal physical and mental health check-ups.

District Officer Seema David said, “This programme is conducted every month on the 9th and 25th at district, community, and primary healthcare levels, focusing on specialised health check-ups for pregnant women.”

During the sessions, four women with high-risk pregnancies were identified. Their families and health workers were advised on special precautions and regular monitoring. They were also educated about maintaining physical and mental health, nutrition, and proper care for both mother and newborn during and after delivery.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Union government, noting that the initiative has helped reduce infant mortality and promoted safe and secure pregnancies. Families highlighted that timely detection of conditions like anaemia allows for proper measures before the next visit.

Helpline numbers were issued, including toll-free 080-47093146/47, Suman Helpline 9098640869, Suman Sakhi WhatsApp 9770905942, and Tele-Manas Helpline 14416, to provide ongoing support and guidance. (With inputs from IANS)
