Overview

In this video, Dr Priya Kadam, Director of Reproductive Genomics at MedGenome Labs, provides essential information on prenatal and newborn screening that every expectant parent should know.

Early detection of genetic abnormalities is key to ensuring a healthy pregnancy and the best possible start for a baby. Dr Kadam explains the importance of screening for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, trisomies, microdeletion, and microduplication syndromes.

She highlights crucial tests that should be considered during pregnancy, including Ultrasound scans, Maternal Serum Screening, and non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT). These tests help assess the baby’s health and can detect potential genetic disorders early on, allowing for timely interventions when needed.

Dr Kadam emphasizes the importance of consulting with a healthcare provider to evaluate any family or personal history of genetic disorders and the need for a proper genetic evaluation if mental subnormalities or dysmorphism are suspected. In addition to the technical aspects of screening, Dr Kadam stresses the importance of open communication with clinicians.

Expectant parents should discuss any potential risks, the most appropriate tests for their specific situation, and the steps to take if abnormalities are detected. By raising awareness and promoting informed discussions, Dr Kadam advocates for proactive healthcare measures to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Whether you are an expectant parent or planning for the future, this video offers vital insights into the world of prenatal and newborn screening, providing the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions for the well-being of both mother and child.
