Fenugreek known scientifically as Trigonella foenum-graecum L. is an ancient herb known for its health and nutritional benefits. Its seeds are rich in fibre, phospholipids, glycolipids, and essential fatty acids such as oleic acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, along with choline and vitamins A, B1, B2, and C. Commonly used as a spice to enhance food flavour worldwide, fenugreek is also valued for its medicinal properties. Fenugreek seeds help manage diabetes, boost immunity, lower cholesterol and act as an antioxidant.

Getting quality sleep is essential for the body’s overall repair and function. Sleep isn’t just “downtime” for the brain and body; it’s an active period when vital processes take place. During sleep, the brain removes waste and toxins, supporting cognitive health and preparing us to learn, remember, and be creative. It’s also a critical time for various body systems, including the blood vessels and immune system, to restore and strengthen. Without adequate sleep, these crucial repair processes are disrupted, which can impact health, mood, and even immunity. Prioritizing good sleep is as important as a healthy diet and regular exercise for maintaining optimal physical and mental well-being.


Dr Rahul Chawla, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), DM (Neurology), Consultant, Neurologist at IBS Hospital, New Delhi suggested lifestyle changes to improve sleep, he told "For better sleep, try keeping a regular bedtime, even on weekends, and create a relaxing wind-down routine before bed—like reading or gentle stretching. Avoid screens and heavy meals right before sleep, and limit caffeine in the afternoon. A calm, dark, and cool bedroom can also make a big difference in sleep quality. Sleep disturbances can be because of many neurological or mental health issues and it is advisable to take professional help from a Neurologist or Psychiatrist."

Can Fenugreek Seed Water Be Consumed for Better Sleep?

While fenugreek seeds contain valuable nutrients such as fibre, phospholipids, glycolipids, essential fatty acids (oleic, linolenic, and linoleic acids), along with choline and vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus from health professionals supporting the claim that fenugreek seed water can be consumed for better sleep.

A study published in the Journal of Menopause Society mentions that fenugreek husk caused a significant improvement in insomnia. However, this study does not mention anything about the effect of fenugreek seeds on the betterment of sleep.

Yet another study published in Food Chemistry mentions that oleamide which is a lipid compound present in fenugreek seed is an endogenous sleep-inducing compound which promotes sleep. Although oleamide is present in fenugreek seeds more research is needed to confirm if that compound in fenugreek seeds is present in quantities sufficient to impact sleep directly.

Only a few studies have noted a link between fenugreek and sleep, and even then, one study highlights fenugreek husk rather than the seeds in aiding insomnia, without connecting fenugreek seeds directly to improved sleep. Another study mentions oleamide in fenugreek but does not establish that its presence is enough to influence sleep. Additionally, there’s a lack of evidence supporting that fenugreek seed water can enhance sleep, and there’s no medical consensus recommending its consumption for this purpose.


Dr Sohet Gogia, Consultant, Neurosurgery, Neurosciences, Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, told Medical Dialogues, "Many folks believe that fenugreek seeds can help with sleep, though science doesn’t quite back this up yet. Traditionally, people have used fenugreek for relaxation and general wellness, so it might help some people sleep a bit better indirectly. But if you’re dealing with sleep issues that are progressively hampering your lifestyle, you will need to get a proper evaluation from a sleep therapist and try other proven remedies or lifestyle tweaks."

To this, Dr Rahul Chawla, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), DM (Neurology), Consultant, Neurologist at IBS Hospital, New Delhi added "Fenugreek seeds are well-regarded for various health benefits, but research doesn’t strongly link them to improved sleep. Historically, people have used them to support overall health, which some say helps them feel more balanced. For ongoing sleep troubles, though, other well-researched methods might offer better results."
