Successful Reverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi Restores Mobility for 68-Year-Old Patient

Bengaluru: After struggling with severe shoulder pain that made everyday tasks nearly impossible, a 68-year-old woman found new hope through an advanced surgical procedure.
Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi has successfully treated Mrs. Basanti, a retired schoolteacher, who had been suffering from severe shoulder arthritis for more than two years. The condition caused her intense pain and greatly limited her daily activities.
Mrs. Basanti, a resident of Bengaluru, had constant pain in her right shoulder that worsened over time. Simple tasks like dressing, combing her hair, cooking, and even lifting a cup of tea became difficult.
Despite visiting several hospitals and undergoing months of physiotherapy, she found no relief. The pain also disturbed her sleep and affected her overall well-being, leaving her frustrated and emotionally drained.
She came to Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi for help. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Manjunath Kodihally, Consultant Orthopaedics, diagnosed her with a rotator cuff tear, a tear in the tendons connecting muscles to bones, causing pain, weakness, and limited movement. Given the severity of the damage and its impact on her life, the team recommended reverse total shoulder replacement surgery.
Dr Manjunath Kodihally explained, "Given Mrs. Basanti’s advanced shoulder arthritis, reverse total shoulder replacement was the most effective treatment option. This advanced surgical technique offered her a chance to regain shoulder movement and function that conventional methods could not provide. The procedure, which took less than an hour, marked a major turning point in her life."
"During the surgery, the damaged joint was replaced with an artificial implant designed specifically to improve mobility and relieve pain. Post-surgery, she experienced a significant reduction in pain along with improved strength, flexibility and stability in her shoulder. This type of surgery is especially beneficial for patients with severe shoulder damage, such as that caused by rotator cuff tears, helping them restore full range of motion and return to an active, pain-free life. Thanks to this successful intervention, Mrs. Basanti can now look forward to a more independent and comfortable future," she further added.
The surgery was completed successfully, and Mrs. Basanti was discharged within a day. She showed noticeable improvement in shoulder movement and function soon after the procedure.
Dr Tejaswini Parthasarathy, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, “At Fortis Nagarbhavi, we prioritize patient well-being and strive to deliver world-class orthopaedic care.
