Robotic Surgery Restores Tongue Cancer Patient’s Smile Without Scars at Age 52 — HCG Cancer Centre Borivali

Mumbai: HCG Cancer Centre, Borivali has successfully treated Ms. Pratibha Sharmila De Silva, a 52-year-old homemaker from Mumbai, diagnosed with tongue cancer. HCG Center is one of the few centres who have mastered the excellence in performing this surgery an advanced Robotic Neck Surgery.
The patient was under the care of Dr. Yash Mathur, Consultant – Head & Neck Surgical Oncology, also one of the doctors who is expert in performing this surgery.
What makes this case truly unique is the innovative robotic approach used to treat Ms. De Silva. Traditionally, surgery for tongue cancer involves a visible scar on the neck, potential nerve dysfunction, and longer recovery.
In this case, Dr. Mathur did a trans-axillary “keyhole” technique, also known as the BABA approach, where small surgical ports were placed in the axilla and anterior chest wall. This allowed complete removal of the two lymph nodes affected without leaving any visible scars on the head, neck, or face, while preserving nerve function and appearance.
This case underscores the advantages of robotic surgery; precise tumor removal, minimal invasiveness, scarless outcomes, minimal blood loss, faster recovery, and less chances of post-surgical infections.
The four-hour surgery on 1st July 2025 resulted in minimal blood loss of just 5 ml, significantly lower than conventional procedures, and enabled the patient to experience less pain, faster recovery, and an early discharge on 7th July. Ms. De Silva returned to her normal lifestyle quickly, with her speech and smile fully intact.
Dr. Yash Mathur explained, “Robotic surgery offers unmatched precision, especially for delicate regions such as the head and neck. In this case, we were able to remove the cancer completely while preserving the patient’s functionality, complete appearance, and overall quality of life.
We continue to lead the way in Head Neck surgery by pioneering and practicing advanced robotic surgical techniques that focus on both clinical excellence and cosmetic outcomes. Our team combines modern innovations with proven traditional approaches to ensure the best possible results for every patient.”
Patient, Ms. De Silva shared, “Without any addiction, being diagnosed with tongue cancer came as a complete shock to me. My family and I were extremely anxious, not only about the diagnosis but also about how we would overcome it. I was particularly worried about my face and the possibility of visible scars.
Dr. Yash suggested a unique approach through robotic surgery, which turned out to be a life-changing decision. My surgery went exceptionally well, and I was relieved to see no scars on my face, my smile remained intact. I wish to inspire others by sharing my story.
If you notice any unusual symptom, don’t ignore it. Consult your doctor immediately and get it checked. Early diagnosis saved my life, and now I can live it with a big, confident smile.”
