24-Year-Old Man Regains Vision After Complex Surgery at KIMSHEALTH, Trivandrum

Thiruvananthapuram: A 24-year-old man from Kollam, who sustained a severe eye injury when a tree twig pierced into his eye during a road accident, regained his vision after undergoing a critical surgery at KIMSHEALTH, Trivandrum.

The accident occurred when the young man, riding a two-wheeler, collided with another vehicle and fell onto the road. During the fall, a tree twig pierced his left eye, with over half of the 15-centimeter-long twig penetrating below the pupil and extending into his nasal cavity. The impact also caused severe skull injuries, as his helmet was dislodged during the collision.

The case was highly complex, requiring a coordinated effort from specialists across multiple departments. The surgery, which lasted over an hour and a half, involved carefully enlarging the incision to extract the twig without damaging the pupil or surrounding tissues.

The wound on the nose bridge was repaired using an endoscopic procedure, and bleeding was controlled through nasal packing.

The patient’s recovery was made possible by the combined efforts of specialists from the departments of Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

“Such cases carry a high risk of vision loss. Although the pupil remained intact, the surrounding blood vessels and nerves were severely damaged. Timely and expert intervention was crucial in restoring the patient’s vision and saving his life,” said Dr. Arun P.S, Consultant, Department of Neurosurgery, who led the treatment.

The surgical team included Dr. Salil Kumar K, Senior Consultant, Department of ENT; Dr. Suraj Kumar, Senior Consultant, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Dr. Daisy Karan, Consultant, Department of Ophthalmology; and Dr. Gopan G and Dr. Arun NS, Consultants, Department of Anesthesia.

Following a ten-day hospital stay, the patient was discharged successfully and has since made a complete recovery. His case underscores the importance of timely medical intervention and multidisciplinary expertise in managing complex trauma cases effectively.
