India faces a significant mental health burden, with one in every seven Indian living with some form of mental disorder. At the same time, the country continues to grapple with an acute shortage of mental health professionals and adequate infrastructure. India has just four public mental health beds per 100,000 population, highlighting the limited availability of specialist care and infrastructure.
As a result, between 70% and 90% of people living with mental health conditions in India do not receive the adequate treatment and long-term support they need. This treatment gap reflects systemic challenges in accessibility, awareness and capacity, underscoring the urgent need for strengthened mental health services and integrated, community-based care models across the country.
With the launch of Adayu, Fortis Healthcare aims to bridge this burdening gap with a dedicated facility focused on acute psychiatry care, de-addiction and rehabilitation.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD & CEO, Fortis Healthcare said,
“Adayu represents a transformative milestone in India’s mental healthcare journey, addressing a long-standing gap in infrastructure, investment, and systemic integration within the nation’s healthcare framework.
More than a purpose-built in-patient facility, it signals the beginning of a broader evolution toward a stronger, more inclusive mental health ecosystem across the country, driven by Fortis Healthcare’s vision to enhance and expand its mental health program. The facility in Gurugram is the first in a series of dedicated mental health hospitals planned by Fortis.”
Dr. Ritu Garg, Chief Growth & Innovation Officer, Fortis Healthcare said,
“Adayu combines clinical depth with innovation, using precision medicine through pharmacogenomics, neuromodulation, virtual reality based therapy, AI enabled platforms and tele-medicine. Bringing state of the art innovations in mental health, Fortis is tackling long-standing deficiencies in access and systemic support for mental wellness.”
Dr. Samir Parikh, Chairperson, Mental Health Program, Fortis Healthcare & Adayu said, “Adayu reflects our long-standing commitment to ensuring accessible, compassionate and evidence-based mental health treatment in India.”
