Bengaluru: Gleneagles BGS Hospital in Bengaluru celebrated the ninth anniversary of its ‘Pink Wave’ initiative with the highly anticipated ‘Pink Up the Pace 2024’ run on October 20, 2024. Despite relentless rain, over 1,000 spirited participants gathered to support breast cancer awareness, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to the cause. Originally expecting more than 2,000 attendees, the event—organized in collaboration with Run Addicts, Rotary Gnanakshi, Rotary District 3191, and SJB College of Management Studies—became a powerful testament to community resilience.

Launched nearly a decade ago to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as ‘Pink October,’ Pink Wave has evolved into a significant movement. Through impactful events like the Pink Ride cyclothons and Pink Up the Pace runs, it has played an essential role in educating the public about breast cancer while supporting patients and survivors. This year’s run highlighted the initiative’s continued success, with enthusiastic participation underscoring its influence and reach.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading health threats for women globally, with statistics indicating that one in eight women is at risk of developing the disease in their lifetime. Early detection, however, significantly improves survival rates, increasing them to as high as 95%. The 'Pink Up the Pace' run aimed to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, particularly for women aged 30 and above, emphasizing regular Breast Self-Examinations (BSE), screenings, and annual tests as crucial parts of routine healthcare.

The event was graced by noted Indian theater artist and film director Prakash Belawadi, who served as the chief guest. Belawadi lauded the participants' dedication despite adverse weather, emphasizing the vital role of community involvement in spreading awareness. “Pink Wave not only raises awareness but also encourages individuals to prioritize their health,” he said, inspiring attendees with his words.

Dr. Sindhu, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Gleneagles BGS Hospital, highlighted the lasting impact of the Pink Wave initiative: “For nine years, Pink Wave has been more than just an event—it’s a movement aimed at empowering women with knowledge. Regular self-exams and screenings can safeguard health, and through this initiative, we aim not only to spread awareness but potentially save lives.” She also discussed modifiable lifestyle factors that contribute to 30% of breast cancer cases, urging women to maintain a healthy weight, stay active, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid tobacco to reduce risk.

Dr. Sindhu was joined by a team of dedicated oncologists, including Dr. Rajeev Vijayakumar, Dr. Mathangi J, Dr. Prerna Nesargi, Dr. Govind Eriat, Dr. Karthik K Prasad, and Dr. Kiran Kumar, all committed to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and advocating for lifestyle changes.

Dr. Jatinder Arora, Cluster COO of Gleneagles Hospitals, Bengaluru, emphasized the importance of the event’s success: “Pink Up the Pace 2024 represents our unwavering commitment to combating breast cancer. We are immensely grateful for the community’s overwhelming support, standing together to inspire survivors and empower individuals to take control of their health.”

Mohan Devegowda, Co-founder of Run Addicts Foundation, expressed pride in supporting the campaign: “Having helped thousands achieve fitness goals, we’re proud to support Pink Wave. ‘Health is wealth,’ and this initiative encourages the community to prioritize well-being.”

Ashwin Kumar SG, President of Rotary Bengaluru Gnanakshi Club, reinforced Rotary's commitment to community-driven change, stating, “As part of our Disease Prevention Avenue of Service, Rotary is proud to partner with Gleneagles BGS Hospital in raising breast cancer awareness.”

The run started at Balakrishna Bayalu Rangamandira Stadium in Rajarajeshwarinagara and concluded at Gleneagles BGS Hospital’s Uttarahalli Road campus, with participants rallying together for a shared cause. Through collaboration and dedication, the Pink Wave initiative continues to grow, spreading awareness, promoting early detection, and encouraging women to prioritize their health in the fight against breast cancer.
