Thane: KIMS Hospitals, Thane has successfully performed a minimally invasive cardiac procedure — Aortic Valve Replacement (MICS-AVR) — on a 65-year-old woman with multiple health concerns.

The patient, who weighed 95 kg and had a BMI of 41, was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, making her a high-risk candidate for conventional open-heart surgery.

During preoperative evaluation for a bilateral knee replacement, doctors discovered that she had critical aortic stenosis, which required timely intervention. Considering her complex medical history and elevated surgical risk, the patient chose KIMS Hospitals for its expertise in advanced cardiac care.

The cardiac surgical team, led by Dr. Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant, Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, decided on a minimally invasive mini sternotomy approach for the aortic valve replacement.

Despite the challenges associated with morbid obesity, such as increased risk of intraoperative complications, wound infections, prolonged ventilation, and slower recovery, the surgery was carried out successfully.

The team followed careful planning, precise execution, and coordinated perioperative management to ensure the procedure was safe and effective. After a closely monitored recovery period, the patient was discharged in stable condition, showing promising signs of improvement and regaining strength.

Dr. Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant highlighted the significance of this case, stating, “Managing a patient with multiple comorbidities and morbid obesity is always demanding. By employing minimally invasive techniques, meticulous planning, and a collaborative team approach, we were able to provide safe and effective care.

The support from our anaesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and intensive care teams was critical to the patient’s positive outcome. Our goal is to make advanced, less invasive cardiac procedures accessible to patients who may otherwise face higher surgical risks.”

The successful management of this complex case underscores KIMS Hospitals, Thane’s focus on offering advanced cardiac treatments while prioritizing patient safety, careful planning, and comprehensive post-operative care, ensuring even high-risk patients can benefit from modern, minimally invasive surgical approaches.
