Overview

In this video, Dr Santhosh Kumar Devadas, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru, dispels the myth that breast cancer is always hereditary.

While breast cancer is among the cancers that can have a genetic or hereditary link, Dr Devadas clarifies that this applies to only a small percentage of cases. He explains that out of 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer, approximately 10 will have a hereditary link or carry genes that predispose them to develop the disease.

The remaining 90 women typically do not have such genetic markers or a significant family history indicating hereditary risk. Instead, their breast cancer arises due to other factors, such as lifestyle, hormonal changes, or environmental influences.

This video is essential for those seeking to understand the role of genetics in breast cancer. Dr Devadas emphasizes the importance of identifying real risk factors and not assuming heredity as the sole cause. Watch this video to gain accurate insights into breast cancer and learn why regular screenings and preventive care are vital, regardless of family history.
