Sydney: A team of Australian researchers has developed a new mobile app aimed at improving mental wellbeing and resilience among adults. The app, called 'ReNeuWell', has been launched by Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) in collaboration with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney.

Unlike many mental health tools that focus on managing distress or symptoms, ReNeuWell is designed to promote mental flourishing through a personalised and neuroscience-informed approach. It provides users with insights into both subjective wellbeing - such as positivity, composure, and life satisfaction - and psychological wellbeing, which includes self-worth, sense of mastery, and personal achievements.

“The app is designed for anyone looking for ways to understand and boost their own level of mental wellbeing,” said Associate Professor Justine Gatt, who is leading the project. She emphasised that the app is not only a self-help tool but also a way for individuals to work towards optimal mental health.

The ReNeuWell app creates a tailored four-week programme of daily activities, requiring just 10 minutes of use per day. These activities are based on evidence-based psychological strategies, including mindfulness, meditation, self-compassion, and goal-setting. The app uses the COMPAS-W scale, a validated framework linked to brain function, genetic factors, cognitive performance, and even physical health indicators.

A 12-week clinical trial is currently underway to further validate the effectiveness of the app. NeuRA is actively recruiting at least 500 adult participants from the general public. Those who join the trial will receive free access to the app and will be asked to complete three short surveys during the study period. The trial will also gather feedback from users to refine and improve the app’s features.

The project has been funded by the Mindgardens Neuroscience Network and developed in partnership with the Miroma Project Factory. Researchers believe that the app is a strong example of how collaboration between academia and industry can result in practical solutions for real-world mental health challenges.

ReNeuWell represents a shift in mental health support tools, moving the focus from treating problems to encouraging positive mental development and resilience through structured, science-backed interventions.
